A Calling.

8.9.14

When I started this blog in 2003, I was still performing stand up comedy at least 3 times a week and hosting my own open mic show at a west end bar.  What I realized a few years later was that although I wasn't the worst, I wasn't the best either and I didn't have the passion necessary to keep doing the work.  Joan Rivers had nothing but passion for the work and was still doing it until the very end.  For her it was a calling.  This clip from Louie reminds me of why, even though it wasn't my calling, I'd still rather hang out at the comic's table then just about anywhere else.

I admired Joan because of her grit and determination.  I am inspired by her entrepreneurship, sense of style and her ability to be crassy and classy all in the same breath.  She was a truth teller, and that is something that I strive to be, in my work and my life.  It's almost never easy to do but she made it feel somehow like it was the only option.

And now, so many years after I gave up standing up in bars and night clubs trying to make people laugh, I'm inspired by her as the mother of an only child, a daughter.  Joan was a good mother, that much seems clear, and what a great legacy that is.  But more than that, she was a good mother who did more.  She was always doing more.  We can always do more.

I have written about Joan before on this blog. In case you missed it, my homage to her button front cape, that I plan on wearing every chance I get this Fall.  Thanks for everything, Joan.  You will be so missed!

Words of Wisdom from Bobby Hill.

8.3.12

"Mom I'm fat. But big deal. I don't feel bad about it. You never made me feel bad about it, and just because there are some people in the world who want me to feel bad about it, doesn't mean I have to. So Bobby's fat. Eh. He's also funny, nice, he's got a lot of friends, a girlfriend, and if you don't mind, I think I'll go outside and squirt her with water. What are you gonna do?" - Bobby Hill

I watched a lot of Foghorn Leghorn...

If you've got 15 minutes or so, take a load off, get yourself something yummy to drink and dig into this. Those interested in acting, comedy or showbiz stories (and anyone who misses watching LOST) will find a lot to enjoy here.

This. Needs. To. Happen.

Better than any monologue I've seen on SNL in years.  Not to mention, we already know Cookie can hold his own on late night TV.

Sometimes called "fun city"!

12.8.10

The Robeau is cleaning out his office and just now found Calvin Deforest's CD, which actually, for a novelty record is quite listenable.  It's good cocktail fare.  The best thing about it though is that it sent me over to youtube to rummage through some of that great old Letterman footage from the 80's.  Please enjoy a hot towel!

Eighty Eight and a Half.

Betty White has undergone the kind of resurgence in popularity that the Marx Brothers did in the 1970s thanks to an audience that was, for the most part, too young to have witnessed the stellar work they were doing in their heyday. It seems to me that nobody I know loves The Golden Girls more than people that were born around the time it was airing. Me? I'm a little older and I can only remember White's career as far back as reruns of the Mary Tyler Moore show, when she'd already been at it for decades. The great thing about this particular resurgence is that White is still around, not just to appreciate it, but to continue working and evolving.

The hype leading up to the Facebook-fueled, White-hosted SNL last night was so epic I was convinced it would never deliver. Word that they were branding it a "Mother's Day Special" and including six former female cast members made me worry that they were bringing in ringers to do the heavy lifting and White would be largely sidelined. In the end, I couldn't have been more wrong. Having Fey, Dratch, Rudolph, Poehler, Gasteyer and Shannon on board gave the writers a great well of characters and premises to revisit and frankly, by show's end it felt less like these women were brought in to help out and more like they just wanted to be there to be a part of something special.

When she appeared on the Comedy Central roast of William Shatner White proved that she has a way with an off-colour bit. And SNL relied on that heavily on Saturday night. What makes it work is that it's not just pure shock value. It's not just look at the cute little old lady say "motherfucker" or "you're barking up the wrong lesbian" or "wizard of ass". It's look at the cute little old lady say those things with intelligence and brilliant comedic timing.

White was in every single sketch that aired, even making an appearance on weekend update and delivered 100% through the course of the show. When's the last time you saw that happen? Some highlights for me included:

1. The Monologue.

I have been ranting 'lo these many years to anyone who will listen about the sorry state of affairs in SNL monologue land. Guest hosts, at some point in the late 1990's, seemed to stop being capable of delivering a monologue, opting instead for pre-taped video bits, walking the halls of the studio and interacting with the audience or Lorne or straight up doing scenes with the cast on stage. It's supposed to be a MONOLOGUE. Do it alone. Tell some jokes. Tell a story. "We've got a great show...so and so is here...we'll be right back" and CUT TO COMMERCIAL! You've achieved enough success in show business that you're guest hosting SNL. Suck it up and learn to stand alone onstage and deliver a few lines!

Betty White's monologue last night was everything I want an SNL monologue to be. Part biting stand up set, part humble gratitude and all show business polish. By 11:40pm Saturday night I could have gone to bed a happy girl.

2. Delicious Dish

Bringing back the NPR parody Delicious Dish was a natural with Gasteyer and Shannon on hand. That they were able to reprise the characters and still find a balance between giving White something to sink her teeth into, all while nodding their heads at the classic Alec Baldwin Schweddy Balls sketch was no small feat. I for one, would like to try her Dusty Muffin. Good times.

3. Census

There is nothing I love more than a call back. Ten years ago, Christopher Walken and Tim Meadows appeared in the brilliantly written sketch Census. You might not remember it because it aired the same night as the oft-quoted Walken / Ferrell ensemble sketch "more cowbell" which stole all the thunder. Census is a quiet two hander where the census taker plays the straight man, befuddled by the progressively bizarre answers from the host. Tina Fey wrote that original sketch and had the opportunity bring it back on Saturday night.

There is something so pleasing to me about the idea of taking the premise of the sketch and using it like a template, slotting in a new weird character and new bizarre answers. The structure of the sketch allows the jokes to come at you, rapid fire, but they feel completely organic. It's old school and sharp and I loved every minute of it. Also? "Blarfengarrrrr" is just a funny word. And? It was the funniest sketch of the night and it aired at 12:55am. I'm guessing that has never happened before.

Chalk one up for the ladies. And more importantly, chalk one up for solid writing. While you're at it, chalk a few up for Betty White, who deserves all the accolades that are landing at her feet. Now, riddle me this, where's the Facebook campaign to get Cloris Leachman on there next season? Get on it, nerds!

THE BEST THING ON THE INTERNET.

19.7.09

You remember I told you about my mega talented pal, comedian Andrew Johnston? He's the one responsible for Bitch Salad? Anyway, if you knew him, you'd have a lot of reasons to love him too...not the least of which would be that he introduced us to THE BEST THING ON THE INTERNET.

You are welcome.

Blog Post About Nothing.

21.4.09

I've been watching a lot of Seinfeld reruns lately. I think it may be my ultimate TV comfort food.

Please enjoy the first episode of In Conversation a series of short videos that I'm putting together to introduce you to some of my favourite people in Toronto. In episode one we meet Kristian Reimer, comedian, concerned citizen and stellar drinking buddy.

Too Soon?

11.9.08

We went from this:

To this:

All within a month. Humour highlights people's resilience. And isn't that a wonderful thing?

Letterman's kind words about Rudy don't mean as much as they did seven years ago. Especially not after his anything but courageous performance at the RNC. That's a shame, that he had to sell out his own dignity the way he has, but we can laugh at that too. Cause what else are you going to do? What else can you do?

9/11 is no longer off limits. It's become a punch line of sorts, but always at the expense of those trying to use the tragedy to their own advantage or at those who perpetrated the attacks. Making those guys the butt of any joke is the best, most poetic Eff You I can think of.

Sugar. Water. Purple.

15.4.08

Ah, Chappelle. This does the trick whenever I need a belly laugh. The "drink" phenomenon is more about socioeconomic lines than racial lines, too. When my girlfriends from back in the 'hood (natch) watched this wee peed our pants.

Paul Simms is a very funny man.

25.4.07

Today, while on my lunch break, I almost choked on my Booster Juice Citrus Splash Smoothee with blueberries instead of bananas and an energy booster of ginsing and bee pollen because Paul Simms is a very funny man. Simms started out writing for David Letterman, was later on the staff of the Larry Sanders Show and then created News Radio. This week, he's written the "Shouts and Murmurs" piece in the New Yorker. It's called Four Short Crushes. Please do not read it if you are ingesting food or drink of any kind. Don't say I didn't warn you.

This week in pictures

4.3.07

It's been a busy week Bloggy McBloggerson. I've not felt like writing much, but the viual part of my brain was alive and well. I snapped a lot of pictures. Sometimes I find this is a nice way to clear my head and the quick and easy iphoto and photoshop stuff on my computer allows me to have instant results. As I'm sure you can imagine, I'm a BIG fan of instant gratification. If digital cameras had never been invented I may have never taken a picture. Ever.

Monday night found me at the scenic Old Mill Inn where Mo, the Robeau and I went to see Andy play as part of the new trio, "Generations". The trio is led by the legendary and wonderful Gene DiNovi, with Andy on Guitar and Dave Young, one of the best, and recent Order of Canada recipient, on bass. It was an amazing night of music, played for an enthusiastic, sold out crowd.

Mid week found me at the latest "Moustache Rock Comedy Show" where Reimer (visiting from Boston) and Kirk bring their wacky characters, Tyson and Todd to life and host a bunch of Toronto's top stand ups in a variety show format. The catch? You have to grow a moustache to be in the show. Here's Reimer out of charcter, doing his stand up set. I love this picture because it looks like he could be opening for Lenny Bruce:

You can see all the pics from the 'stache show over at Flickr, if you're so inclined.

Let's see...what else happened this week? What happened that kind of made everything else stop? Something made people CRAZY this week. Mass hysteria, panic, the widespread inability to talk about anthing else. What WAS it???? Oh. Right. It snowed. And that's weird cause, you know, it's CANADA in WINTER.

Mark these dates on your calendar!
