Well, he is the cute one...
22.8.03
I’ve noticed some alarming graffiti cropping up in our fair city. Who is the culprit? Is this a woman in her 50’s going through a mid-life crisis? A teenage kid trying to be ironic? Or is the man himself, trying to get some grass roots publicity? What possible explanation could there be for the words PAUL McCARTNEY #1 being scribbled on whitewashed walls and on subway platforms? I’ve seen it in five different places in five different neighbourhoods in the last two weeks. Now, while I don’t disagree with the sentiment, it strikes me as a really odd outlet for a Paul McCartney fan. What’s next? “LEONARD COHEN ROCKS MY WORLD!” “LIONEL RITCHIE 4EVER (+ INFINITY)” or maybe, “FOR A GOOD TIME, CALL HEATHER MILLS….”
While this public declaration of love for Paulie does strike me as somewhat odd, I have to say that I hope whoever is responsible for this keeps it up. It always makes me smile. And I’m always left with a favorite McCartney tune running through my head. A day spent with “Maybe I’m Amazed” running through your head is a good day. Besides, for my money, he’s still the cute one.

Burned out by the Blackout.
18.8.03
I’m sick of this story already. And I lived it.
Great. The lights went out. We all had to walk places and sweat more than we usually do. It was the biggest blackout in North American history! Great.
Wonderful. We were gauged for $30 by greedy variety store clerks when purchasing water and batteries. We listened to politicians shift blame. We cancelled our weekend plans. Wonderful.
Fabulous. Our mayor has officially shifted from “scary crazy” to “kinda funny crazy”. I am left wondering, when did Mayor Mel perfect his Mel Brooks 2,000 Year Old Man impression? Fabulous.
Blackout, Shmackout.

Ottawa Bound!
13.8.03
Well, I’m flying the co-op. Heading out of my downtown apartment and taking a good old fashioned road trip to visit friends in Ottawa. I’ve yet to visit the nation’s capitol so I want to take in Parliament Hill and The National Gallery. Other than that it should simply be some long awaited quality time with some really great people.
Had a great time at The Laugh Resort last night as always. Such a fun, intimate little room.
For those of you that will be home tonight, NBC is rerunning the Law & Order that Gregory Hines guest starred in last season. Definitely worth a peek. But you knew that, didn’t you?

Remembering Gregory
11.8.03
May 1993. The Virginia Theater, 245 West 52d Street, Manhattan. Row J, Orchestra. Elevated into view on a platform at the edge of the darkened, empty stage, Gregory Hines arrives without fanfare. His back is to the audience, his posture crestfallen. When he finally turns to look at us, he is unsmiling, mute and shuddering. That night Gregory Hines made the single most unorthodox and magnificent star entrance I shall ever see. Nothing could have prepared me for that moment. Not even the 10 months I had spent obsessively listening to the Original Cast Recording of George C. Wolfe’s brilliant show “Jelly’s Last Jam”. It took my breath away. So did Gregory Hines. His elegance, his humour, his ability to carry the dramatic weight of the piece with such dignity. And his voice. My God, his voice. I could listen to that man sing all day. And as I said, I often did.
“Jelly’s Last Jam” captured my imagination in a way nothing had before. When I first got my hands on a copy of that soundtrack I was 18 years old and it spoke to me regarding so many of the things I was passionate about. The theatre. Jazz music. History. The civil rights movement. It had razzle dazzle to be sure, but it also had a message and it had heart. I was intoxicated by it. By the notion that theatre could do all those things at once. Gregory Hines was the heart and soul of that production.
Two nights after I saw the show, I went back a second time. I couldn’t stay away. Attending this piece of theatre was like a religious experience for me. In fact, I still listen to that soundtrack every few months. Different days inspire different emotions but whether I sing along or laugh or cry I am always moved.
Yesterday, when I put the soundtrack into my CD player it was my little, private way of eulogizing Gregory Hines. My way of remembering his talent and his life. My way of somehow trying to make the news that he had died of cancer at the age of 57 real. My way to try and make sense of the loss.
The man is gone too soon, another victim of this horrible, random disease.
He will be missed. He will be remembered.

Place LOGO here
6.8.03
So people like to wear shirts with corporate logos on them. I’ve noticed this. They like to wear their Nike and Addidas and what not. That’s cool. Whatever. I generally refrain from wearing stuff like that because it probably only serves to make people wonder why I’m not working out more. “She has the T-shirt, why doesn’t she MOVE more?”
It’s kind of like girls that wear t-shirts with pictures of other girls on them. You’re not going to catch me wearing a t-shirt with a picture of another girl on it. Like I need absolute strangers thinking, “Sure, she’s pretty, but she’s no Marilyn Monroe. How do I know? Cause she’s RIGHT THERE on her shirt.” I do not need the scrutiny. I do not.
I bring this up because I saw a nice looking fellow walking down Yonge Street this weekend in a T-shirt that read, in big block letters, NOT ENDORSED BY ANYONE. I see what he was going for. A nobody owns me, Naomi Klein, defiant attitude.
Problem is, it just made him look like nobody likes him.

Givin' John Graves his props!
5.8.03
Hope you all enjoyed your day off. Now it's time to remember that this "civic" holiday was actually named after someone.
John Graves Simcoe, in 1791, became Upper Canada's first Lieutenant Governor.
He introduced British institutions such as the courts and trial by jury.
He also ended slavery and began to open up the province by building roads and giving land to American settlers.
Good on ya, JG!

Splattered!
1.8.03
I woke up this morning to a message from my Mother. “It’s nothing important, dear,” she said “There was some action in your neighbourhood and I just wanted to make sure you weren’t splattered all over Yonge and College”.
It wasn’t till I read about the 12 car pile up / police chase that happened last night that I knew what she was talking about. Here I thought it was a typical "you don't call enough" guilt trip.
I love my Mother’s use of colourful descriptives.
