In Conversation with George Benson

I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with George Benson in anticipation of his upcoming Toronto Jazz Festival show.  The Grammy-winning jazz legend talked about his latest album and his mainstream appeal.

We're in the car, the Robeau is driving us home from the opening night of Billy Elliot at the Canon Theatre.

Me: (while typing on my blackberry) I realize, by the way, that I look like some kind of 80's douchebag in these fingerless gloves.

Him: meh.

Me: I mean, it just makes it so much easier to type on the blackberry.

Him: I hadn't noticed.

Me: Seriously? I look like an overfed Dickensian orphan.

Him: Please Sir, may I tweet some more?

What I said to emphasize our differences before he rolled his eyes and walked away.

We are driving through Tim Horton's so the Robeau can get a Medium Regular coffee to bring back to the hotel room.

Him: Do you want anything?
Me: I want to go to that Starbucks over there.

In the parking lot outside the Starbucks, the Robeau spots a variety store.

Him: Do you want to get some snacks to bring back to the room?
Me: Do you want a couple of those Petite Vanilla Scones from Starbucks? I can grab a couple of those while I get my latte.
Him: They're like a delicacy...too fancy...
Me: You know what this is like? This is just like that video for Uptown Girl.
