On Lingering

24.1.13

We all hear so much these days about living in the moment that I feel like it brings on some analysis paralysis in some of us (cough, me) who are just trying to get through the day.  One visit to Pinterest can leave me with so much inspiration I feel like I need to hide under Maya Angelou's bed for 38 hours.  Fear that I'm not "in the moment" can cause me to abandon the moment altogether.  Lame, right?  Get out of your head, right? I know, trust me, I KNOW.

This moment during President Obama's second inauguration was so special, I thought.  A reminder that if the most powerful human on the planet can take the time to linger in the moment than we should too.

"I want to take a look one more time. I'm not going to see this again." —President Obama pausing while leaving his second inaugural ceremony to look out onto the crowd on the National Mall
I mean, the list of blog posts I haven't written, the phone calls and emails I haven't returned the dishes in the sink?  They can wait if I want to take another half hour to "draw creatures" with Lenny or linger over dinner with my family.  Hell, they can even wait if it's 11pm and I just want to have a glass of wine with the Daily Show.  Moments...it's really all we've got.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to have a moment with my friend Tiny Barack.  Please, give us a little privacy.

  1. Never in all my born days did I ever expect a politician to inspire anyone! It's nice that the Baracks (live action and tiny) were there for you.

  2. They do what they can, the Baracks. You should check out John Lewis' Facebook page some time. He might turn you around.
